We are lucky enough to own 7 acres of woodland at our home. The majority of the trees are Sitka spruce planted in 2002 by the previous owner. We are managing the existing trees by thinning and making clearings with a view to making a much more diverse, productive site. This is a 25 year project!
In the mean time, I’m making the most out of the trees we have. We use Sitka spruce for firewood, roundwood framing, making planks and the needles get used in compost toilets. A friend even used the bark to tan some deer hides.
