The course will be lead by James Chapman who has built a number of cabins, woodshed, structures and small houses both for himself and clients. James also manages the site at Willowburn Wood.

Roundwood framing uses the natural round shape of the tree. The buildings themselves could end up being any shape, round, rectangular or square. Using the trees “in the round” has many benefits including strength and beauty.

Dates. Courses run from 10am Monday – 5pm Thurs. If helpful, you can arrive on Sunday for an extra camping charge of £15.

Course 1. 3rd-6th June 2024

Course 2. 19th – 22nd August 2024

Both courses have the same content.

What will we cover on the course?

Understanding roundwood theory, creating foundation pads, surveying the site to give us final lengths for each leg, choosing trees for each part of the structure, processing trees, removing the bark using draw knives, creating a design for the build, making wooden mallets (to use on the build), laying out on the framing bed, scribing joints, chiselling out joints, drilling holes ready for dowels, talking through raising the frame and demonstrating how to cut rafters. During the course we will complete one cruck frame between us.

This course is suitable for anyone wanting to build cabins, workshops, woodsheds and garden structures. No prior experience needed

Willowburn Woods is a diverse site with conifers, broad leaf and open wetland areas. The total site is about 7 acres.

Travel : The address is Willowburn Lea, Leadburn, EH46 7BE. Leadburn is serviced by the X62 bus which runs from Edinburgh to Galashiels. If you are driving you will be asked to drop your camping gear off and then park your car in a layby on the main road. It’s about 2 mins walk from the site.

Accommodation – Accommodation is camping on site in your own tent. We have a compost loo on site and there is access to a shower at certain times. We have a covered cooking space.

Optional extras :

  • There is a small cabin with double sofa bed available for an extra fee of £100 for the whole course. First come, first served for this. Please still bring bedding.
  • There are a maximum of 2 spaces for small (VW transporter) campervans. £40 extra for these.
  • If helpful, you can arrive on Sunday for an extra camping charge of £15.

Food – Hot drinks and water are provided, but you need to bring your own food. Participants normally end up co-odinating a group cook-up. There are shops within a few miles including the community owned Storehouse in Penicuik.

Course fees : Standard fee is £350 for the 4 days.

I have a limited number of bursary places available if you can not afford the full fee. Please contact me before booking, explaining your financial situation and why you’d like to attend. These places are only possible because others pay their full fee. contact.nonstuff@gmail.com
